From the badgers to Marquette from UW win the white water some of the best college basketball can be found within our borders right here in the state of Wisconsin alongside a professor in under Bergen our producer Brenda Schultz and done what so let's let's talk some college basketball this is the college basketball's on 157 FM the fan. And it starts now. Well commands of the college basketball so right here on 1057. FM the fan it is Christmas time in the middle of march once we get rolling here. With the NCAA tournament as Jeff said right now Wisconsin. Taking god Villanova the number one seed they got a 93 lead early on here in the first half so we appreciate you. Joining us here for the college basketball so in the midst of everything going on with the turn amend this afternoon. Shortly will be joined by good friend of the show ought to be Ronnie. Ronnie a former all American and team captain with Marquette University back in the ninety's. Gonna be kind enough to give us. Some time here this afternoon he'll be joining us shortly on the great midwest bank hotline before we get to that. The professor Dan under bird is down at the B mole Harris Bradley Center or working with a group of students from. Come courting your university armada. Give concordia university a bit of a shout out here if you are interested. With. Anything related to the business of sports entertainment. You need to check out concordia university if that's. Where you're heading for as far as a career path goes they're doing some great things already concordia. Right now the professor is down there as I noted he's got a group of students their work in the hospitality room. For the first round of the NCAA tournament being held down at the Bradley Center. Hopefully. He will be able to join us in the last segment of the show is we always Sobel a follicle fleet. The professor Dan under verbal have an opportunity to join us then via the great midwest bank hotline also. A regular honor shows mr. Brendan souls Brandon is in the midst of coaching. A youth basketball team that advanced in the eight turn amid being held this afternoon. So Brandon may or may not have the opportunity to. Drop in here and join us but nonetheless we wish Brandon and his team a lot of success. This afternoon. Also playing right now we've got two teams left in the tournament in the midst of March Madness we sent nine teams. Within division two in division three we sent four teams. As far as division one goes obviously Wisconsin playing now Marquette fell last night double talk about that shortly. You had UW Green Bay on the women's side and also Marquette on the women's side Marquette now with in three. Bought four plus minutes left in that contest with quinnipiac. Problem. Quinnipiac I'll say it this way and inject you wanna jump in here for a second. Al Knoll but you but what I see. Quinnipiac University the only thing I keep thinking of is when you watch the morning news shows they always have the holes. Differences with the presidential election that's all I knew a bottom so I thought Marquette should roll through this. But did you investigate a little bit and you see what that women's program has done their. I wanna say like 27 and three somewhere in that area a very good program Marquette has trickled. This entire game as far as the women go in now within three with about four and a half left but Jeff the first thing I want to talk to you but is this. Tom Green. Fired this week down at Indiana obviously the Milwaukee tied here with Marquette university and I'd I didn't have a good taste in my mouth so to speak when Tom crane left it was almost like back in the day when the colts. Backed up the truck and move Dottie Indianapolis in the midst of the night when Tom cream took off. But dead I hear Tom crane kind of lobbying possibly for a position at DePaul wanting to turn that program around and my friend on the other side of the table I know wasn't DePaul fan and I thought I'd get your thoughts mr. Jeffries. I find it hilarious obviously. You know the word comes out and then he gets fired there was. Every one in the studio here just started cheering. I just laughing and smiling in heaven a good old time and you wanna talk about the to go from Indiana one of the Mac because of basketball. To dump Paul. Well. Here's a thing if if we remember correctly one of the reasons he said he left Marquette had nice things to say don't get me wrong. But he wanted to go to Indiana because it was the Mecca of basketball it was his dream job it's where he wanted to beat. I don't know what goes on behind the scenes obviously we only see what the team does from a game by game perspective. But. The buyout for Tom creamed if they would've waited I think it was three or four more weeks would have been something. In the ballpark of four million dollars less than a five million dollar buyout he got by firing him when they did. So whatever was going on in Indiana they obviously could not wait to show him the exit sign because if they wait in essence one more month. The university. Saves for roughly again I'll have the numbers in front B but about four billion dollars in buyout they couldn't wait. To get Tom crane out the door. Yeah that must in that situation must have been so toxic. And everybody you know for the most part everybody thought it was coming. Is been speculated for the last few years that he was gonna get shown the door. But like you said if you can't even hold onto him for three more weeks for four or five million. That had to be just an awful situation. And that's one of the things I'm hoping we're gonna get to elope when Ronnie for joins us because Ron he's got some great perspective. Balls from B. Playing perspective and a bull call it a behind the scenes look into everything that goes on to collegiate basketball so we're going to be after adding shortly. To get Ronnie and a great midwest bank hotline were inside of 510 the goal. Down in Miami Marquette trails quinnipiac by five. Sixty to 55 before we get to the great midwest bank hotline here one other thing and Jeff you can also chime in on this. This is one of the things we talked about last week and one of the things that came about was the whole gym daytime dame where he kind of trashed. Greensboro can I give a huge shout out to the MIT because once you're accused didn't make the NCAA tournament. The NIT grabbed Syracuse game and number one seed now Syracuse falls to needle old miss they lose by five. To old miss at home. Syracuse got sent to Greensboro if you're the first round at Q we give a shout out to the NIT for one of the great marketing ploys of all time to draw a little bit attention. Of the NIT tournament in the midst of March Madness all. Absolutely that was fantastic. You know and even in the NCAA tournament. You know they set these teams up. Where if Marquette what do one yesterday then they'd be playing duke we need him. While Joseph against duke and they do that all the time but yet that was fantastic how they did date time. Well I believe the sign has been lit and on the great midwest bank hotline right now we are pleased. To be joined by our friend mr. Ronnie referred rotting it's only been three years in the making and how you do it. Are there already. Are very appreciative well we appreciate you taking some time I know with the time difference and it is not like you sit around doing nothing your busy guy these days are just. Yeah I am but I you know always a pleasure to be able to calling him and actually value where you think it needed some appreciative of the opportunity and upward. Roddy let's talk a little bit about though the current Marquette team one that obviously lost in the first round last night South Carolina. From your perspective and being an alumni how do you feel. The program is doing or do you think it's headed and are you pleased with what you've seen so far from cold to go to. Yes I had a chance to our played against see senator dole about him but. I was deputy Marquette hundredth anniversary and a chance to actually be there. Really personable great guys. I think the program is headed in. The right direction. With his leadership. I was look I would. I can believe him when the game last I actually sleep a lot to gain. Are black they put in a valiant effort and it's been really all year long but I think the program is in great hands. Athletic director. Also the president really went on higher degree I would edit his staff. It is extremely knowledgeable. Running when you look at this team. They're young let's just face it they're young they've they've got a lot of growing to do and especially if you can keep this core group right now out together over the next. Three years the this group could be something special down the line. From your. Analysis what do you think this team needs has it begins to mature because when you bring in whatever freshman they're gonna Grohl right along with this upcoming sophomore class. Yes. You know I think they have a good core. And in terms of getting great recruits but really it's about getting into their system. I noticed yet there were a lot of action passes that were being made in McKee. They play hard they ditch and are witches. You called war grows our style. So I think whoever comes and I'm just really bringing them a law. You know. As part of the puzzle we're really getting them to play hard it together did you see that same machine that's happening throughout the year of the teams like art together. You know they end up executing down the stretch. You know winning some games I know that Villanova game was great turning. Well right now Villanova and Wisconsin going head to head Ronnie when you look at. This tournament in March. You hear differing opinions as to many people say you need good guard play someone will say you need somebody down in the post. In lately with the way the game has swung away relief from the low post player right here a number of people start talking about you need dead shooter in the three or four spot to carry you as you make your way throughout the tournament from your perspective. What is the most important aspect I have. As a team not only wants to be playing its best basketball but what is in your opinion the most important position rolling into march. I think it marched you have to have the versatility. On and you bill one or two players on your team that can elevate. While the team still playing together. But let's face it you know if you lose you go haul so to be able to how one or two players that can really elevate. It really maintain their level play at a very high level. And how that consistency. What it is turner to time it key so I would say the versatility. That you've seen. I've been watching some of the gains that you see some players it's and now. You know you see the shooters obviously that helps. But I really think the team that is jelling at the right trying. With two Big Three players everywhere now really playing part to really be you know being very very special. I regretted those teams are very hard to guard if you have five quarters back in elevate. But if you have just two victories special players that elevate. In teams are depending. I really figured gulf war. Ronny with. With the advent Dora the increase not the advent blue with the increase in money within the NCAA tournament right now what we find our longer half times. The timeouts the 32 timeout is actually a minute a full timeout is actually two minutes. Does depth really matter once you get to the NCAA tournament because a coach necessarily doesn't always have to go so deep into his fenced. To try to save legs because the timeouts in the half times have been extended so greatly. I think death is always a great thing to have as a coach but ultimately a lot of coaches who really don't utilize the edge just because. They feel certain players haven't progressed along and it's really cured die in this particular situation archer. However you know in terms of the death. Having debt definitely helps. What really happened act brook or players are really out. At the end of the day. You know players or to achieve. But when it's this moment when it at the end of the year that's what every you know college division one basketball player really dreams. It's about elevating so you can be picky but it's about the mental aspect of the game so whatever players can really caption that that mental aspect because. Back to back games or even whether its longer. It just really elevates financial. That are. In order which do that the key to push through which shots aren't going down. Those who want that you see really elevate the teams that you really cheap. Pleased to be joined and great midwest bank hotline with. Righty for former Marquette great here back in the ninety's before I get another question in just wanna give you an update. Right now down in Miami were inside. Of two minutes Marquette trailing by two to quinnipiac 6563. In the first round of the women's division one NCAA. Tournament Ronny let me ask you this go back to the ninety's what was at a bar Marquette that had you come to the city of Milwaukee. Sure. You know it's funny because I took official visit to Cornell department. Harper. Saint John's. And so for me I have never been to the midwest before actually went out archer. And when I went out to Marquette I bogeys really dreamed of playing division one basketball high level but I wasn't heavily recruited all of so I went out there and I really loved it really close knit community. Com more importantly academically they're scored sort champs are really. Excel academically are also saw an opportunity. If our work really hard to really play right away. So all those things also with coach O'Neill in the players authorities there. I'm really really intrigued. So I'm very very pleased and appreciate the opportunity because I was a lately recruit. At the time I wasn't very highly recruited. I believe if I'm not mistaken market got involved like in March. February so I was very late but I went up there and I sort great institution. A great fan base. Excellent academics. Solid reputation and obviously a chance to play our high level and contribute right away. Ronnie just justice gave me decide were up against a break you got some time to hang what do static. I truly fair editor such as awesome so when we come back after the break looked deep. Continue I'll get it out here will continue our discussion. With the Rodney Buford. Right here on the college basketball show will do that next as I said this is the college basketball shall right here on 157 FM the fan. Or once again welcome back here into the college basketball sold right here on 1057. FM the fan. A real quick update quinnipiac 67 Marquette 65. Six seconds remain down in Miami in the opening round of the women's NCAA. Tournament so let's hope that something miraculous can happen here. Within these six seconds to propel Marquette to a second round matchup we immediately go back to the great midwest bank hotline joining us. From New York it's Ronnie for former Marquette star Ronnie is still there. Yes I am a nice glad to still have you with us Ron Allen talk about some things with regards to. Collegiate basketball I guess in general and we'll keep it up front here is you and I both. Did some graduate work together and I used to just enjoyed. The discussions and debates that we had on Monday night's over a cardinal streets university. Let me ask you this with the way the NCAA is with regards to of the tournament. I got the impression last week watching the seeding show. That when they interviewed members of the committee that seeded and sent teams to various locations. I called it NCAA speak. They tended to use what ever rule or metric system that they had in order to justify some of the things that they did. And I didn't find much consistency there. Is their frustration. With the NCAA with regards to hollow BC teams and how they send teams to the various locations. You know I think some coaches are frustrated. You know what. I also think some coaches especially in some of the smaller content to seal that it they don't get a fair chance are in order to make the tournament. But you know the NCAA tournament throughout the whole year they ever really hard job to decipher. To really come up with proceeding. The appropriate locations to place the teams aren't so I think that door and middle of a fine job you know any time you. Teams that don't make it or teams that are saying that they should be higher seed or wired to lower seed. There's always going to be controversy but again. You know they look at drop whole year certainly towards the end of the year drop or so it will yearlong process and have a really really hard job to do. I'm but I will say that. You know you see there's really a lot of parity in college basketball so any time you know someone is seven feet or tendencies or five seat. You know at the end of the day. It's another game. And yes they are scheduled may have been a little stronger but ultimately it's a matter of just playing the game and now you have one more game. Before your seat and is potentially older and it's about putting more about actors are at at which accords are. Let me ask you about that just for a quick second on the deviate awful were I was hadn't but. Each you've been obviously collegiate athlete you've been through tournaments and everything that you know evolves around the game. Last night you had some seniors on their Marquette team that went into the locker room and not only had to deal with the disappointment of losing eight tournament game but then also had to have the realization that. They're collegiate career had come to an end. Take us inside the locker room and and give us an idea of really. What goes through your mind in your heart your soul is used sit down and you start to realize is they're looking into your locker that. Your collegiate careers come to an end. You know I think. A lot of players it it doesn't really hit it and control. You know you get back to campus and there's really no more practice. You know when you have that final meeting so for some players. It's definitely immediate disappointment. For others obviously players that are going to the highest level at the each whether it be here and nationally. On it is one that you're over it. Not fairly quickly but as it starts to progress at the week's chart progress. These are to now prepare for it you know life after school which it actually. You should have already prepared for you know even per year to three years four years that you've already been. Oh without a doubt is it disappointment I think the biggest thing our guard is. This sense of camaraderie that you do get out from being on a key. No matter what level whether it's high school college or professional. That is gone. You know you just in Costa and now you mean apps and study altogether. But ultimately that really on that yet of traveling on the roll them on that you've yet of being in study altogether. You know the bar that you give jets really take Ian will be our. You know sharing ideas where those things are lost. Are acting goals are really the biggest are horrible but I think if you speak to every former player. That it takes awhile to really get used to it. And no matter what level that your place. Real quick before our follow up to question we're joined under great midwest bank hotline right now. Ronnie you for joining us out New York. Two point six seconds remain in the women's. Matchup here between Marquette in quinnipiac Marquette with the basketball downed threes so obviously gonna have to. Throw some up from beyond the arc to see if they can extended. And they threw up with three and it rattled in and out so. Marquette. They will be headed back home here on an outstanding effort. In their division one match up all right so Ronnie let's let's continue with that so to speak. Has you get older in life happens do you have the opportunity to reconnect with some of the players that you spent your better part of four years with playing a Marquette. You know from the former players that upset the way Ross. 6060. Are we had so there is that connection now you know with technology is very easy to connect with former players on pole text and pinstripe. Our tree line. Do you do you do have that. But that their actions of BC. No matter where you are the world. You spend so much time together. And that's stupid that's really. The pieces that you know that that you missed that that battle going into battle. Com you know complained to gain stole it goes on the engine ministry ballots you know it's it's a different level and acting well. All of you turn your Mac however. It is different as opposed to when you're actually putting on the uniform so now the connection is. You know what do apparently with the age. You know taking and gain. Those type of change. But it's not as if there's ten to twelve Iraq now right on you know during that time because people pretty much scattered throughout the country. Right let's go back to the NCAA once real quick. If if you're sitting in Indianapolis in Europe a board room innate Cody UN AC running if there's one thing. Right now with regards to collegiate basketball if you had the power to change what a week. I would say that every student aptly. Not just in basketball. And every other sport. Can actually. Have a chance to always go back to their institution. To receive fair undergraduate degree and even master's degree. If they choose you. I think that if you. Have every single student athlete who participated. To be able to just come back. And two graduate if they did not I think the schools. The NCAA. And the players themselves they owe it to themselves. In order to get. Because I think what happens is when your student athlete especially a higher level. You know Alabama football those type of programs where. There's so much time that you really are not able to be a part of the regular student experience. And I think if universities will give. Former student athlete opportunity to come back to graduate I think actors really be positive it's just another seat it's really not tuition based. It's somehow that legislation passed. I think they'll be partnered because it alternately. Not everyone is going to graduate in four years or three years three years sure so. I think it's just you know I think that universities can do to really oh. The student athlete. You know move on no matter where they were able launch. Immediately about it at city maybe there's a partnership with all the universities. That they can have a seat. An orator there really received her undergraduate degree Ronnie I was senator Lamar recommend. Right what about from the medical aspect I I have this firm belief that even within the NFL all of the the lawsuits and things that came about because of the concussion. Protocol. Would not have gotten to the level it did had the NFL taking care of its former athletes from. A medical perspective and the same thing can be said. With collegiate sports because especially with football and it can happen in basketball and all the other. Sports that students participated in injuries are a part of athletics. And I think sometimes some of these players then once. They're four years is done return back. To the quote on quote public and don't necessarily have the same comprehensive coverage. That you had in college and I guess I'm looking for your thoughts on that because I think if we could do one saying. At the professional and at the collegiate level is somehow extend. Somehow this medical insurance. Component to make sure these athletes that have received catastrophic injuries. Could still receive the care necessary as they make their way in to their adulthood. I agree that's I know the end NBA has to our program very similar to actually recently for retired player. And you don't in their are a lot of players that for whatever reason will not. You know maybe there was a nagging knee injury arms all of those things I think that the Greek armed. Idea agreed concept whether it happens logistically because of that amount of money ball. I don't know Alter what happens on but I do think there are a lot of injuries I go to us. From the players themselves they just dismissed them energy saving the best trainers the best care in there when they graduate. They may not really be registered so those injuries continue to nag. Column whether it needs rather it should act whether it's serious you know ACL industry in the injuries that happen. I think that will be a very very positive thing. Another thing about how like it is. Another thing that I would love to see in the college athletic arena. Is that every college and and I know some schools to go great job it. In other schools don't just because they don't have the resources side so it is very all of really depleting eighties. Almost eight. A coordinator is someone that there that is their sole purpose of making sure they're connecting student athletes are to internships. Palm and also connecting them. Which some type of job training outlaw there's a student athletes and I think that coincides with receiving degrees. On because oftentimes many athletes. Don't have the connection may be that others Tuesday. Because they haven't interacted with the general population of the campuses. So they are if they don't go 40 you're really at a disadvantage if they don't have a decreed. Actions. So I think everything they can do in terms of career counseling now I know a lot of colleges do. But again if that would be like something that competence at every single college no matter what the resources. I think that would help as well. We're talking with a righty for former Marquette star on the great mid West Bank hotline Ryan wanna go back to something that you had said a few minutes ago. And we were talking. A buyout or you were talking about excuse me. How much time is invested in a collegiate athletics when you're a member of a team on the division one program and I don't think many outside of those connected with the university or maybe have a relationship with someone. Who is playing ball at the division one level or division two were division three for that matter. Understands the depth of the commitment that takes place. Can you just kind of from an outline perspective kind of runs rule the amount of time that you had to invest not only in school. But also in two what was the basketball program. Sure. Your I think in many respects the actual experience or of a student athlete. Are positive because your timing is extremely structured from 730 brought this all the way junior classes. And then after classes let sit around two UR practice. After practice. After their meals there's also. String training at the strength training that also study all. So your days really mapped out all the way from 730 to 730 at night. On it and often times. And you know they're games throughout every single day so there's study all the on the on the road. You know you may now to a different you may have a game on Wednesday in May not leave it so. You know Tuesday night on a chartered plane and then played a game might be right back a little bit Thursday Cox's. Com goes so you're time is extremely scheduled out in there's not a lot of free our especially during the season and even after the season. You have your individual workouts along with your strength training. So it in my estimation the actual college student experience to an athlete experience as one that very structured. We are crying however are on the flip side. You know you can get stopped in Iraq where you're only around other student athletes. Where you're not experience seeing different ships of other students that it and the university. You're not really able to go see. A great person. And all sorts someone that's coming in for a lecture. Potentially because you have comp which sold all the things that you keep in mind. As you because as you know that you're coming to campus and you're going to be a student athlete but I think it's also important to people and noble side. I'm sort of giving you know to give and take on the schools to a tremendous job. Scheduling student athlete a normal that they did where your time is just very structured. You know with the academics and with the sports. So it's it's it's it's quite busy it's not that you're just playing games and you're running. It so. It's one that's very detailed and one that's very one that demand a lot of and quite frankly is not a war everyone. Ryan got time for one more question let me know when you sold out their bracket. We've got win in this staying in why. You know it's funny we had a bracket. My job and you'll I'd love to see. I'm not a really big on the brackets but. I did actually it is. You and the Arizona. You know making a pretty far but for me I just love watching. Really at that talked about you know different seeds are playing I love the excitement. You know what this team had a great year but ultimately this other achieve it now pushing them took a break. So for me I just love watching Corey college genes into seeing the different parity. Are in learning about potentially players that you never drew about which event. On it also when the lights are on it would be seated at the end. You know ultimately it really doesn't matter what they did it previously so I loved the Eagles IV experiences. Seeing which team elevate on it would seem you know kind of you don't shy away from that. Ronnie that was the greatest politically correct answer I think ever heard of when it comes to fill it out a bracket for the NCAA tournament if there Friday it it's been a long time and a making and I can't take you enough for take it some time. To join us here on the college basketball shall. Best wishes and hopefully the next time we talked it won't be three years. I agree yeah I think I really appreciate. It looked like yeah people connect would be back beyond orange order. As only about a month ago I just want you forwarded its orders well you can look you guys. Ronnie take care thanks again. During here that's run you for joining us on the great mid West Bank hot line. Leggett says that a long time an American it was good to have mystery for on this show we get a step aside and take a break him we come back. Will talk about some things with regards to the tournament that affected us here in this state of Wisconsin. And and don't forget. In the four segment has always we sell all the fog this is the college basketball so right here 0157 FM the fan. Cool welcome back once again to the college basketball still right here on 1057. FM the fan. It was awful nice variety birds take as much time as he did this afternoon joining us here on the great midwest bank hotline always good to have. Talked to Ronnie because he not only was a fantastic. Player. Four Marquette but he is one of the most intelligent human beings you're ever gonna wanna speak with on a wide variety of subjects are once again thank you to. Ronnie for for joining us here on the college basketball so as I noted earlier. The women's team at Marquette falls to quinnipiac 6865. In the opening round. Of the women's division one NCA tournament. And Jeffrey as always we seem to talk about this quite a bit another 125. Upset quinnipiac the twelve Marquette the five. But it seems like whether it's on the women's side or the men's side those 125 match ups. Ten to bring about the best in the number twelve seed and then the upsets take place from there. Yeah it's amazing how like you just said men's side women's side doesn't matter it the twelve file has always comes through. It's crazy. It's crazy to think that right now we sent. When we talk about division one division to division three with regards to the NCA in the NE IA depending on. Collegiate programs here in the area we sent thirteen teams. To a national tournament we sent nine and I'm dumb including both men and women we sent nine teams. Division three we sent one team in the NA IA division to we obviously sent four teams. To the NCAA division one tournament and right now. We're down to Wisconsin our hopes and dreams are falling on the badgers says. The other squads have gone down whether whether they've gone down in the first round we've had a couple of teams like the women's program at Oshkosh in the women's program. At cardinal streets university make the sweet sweet sixteen excuse me. But we were all sitting here right now with their hopes and dreams. Writing on Wisconsin as they're getting ready to go to halftime clinging right now to be four point lead. And this would be just a huge win not only would they get to the sweet sixteen but if you can knock off the number one seed. This team and we've talked about it extensively on the show has dealt with this whole idea of at least from my opinion a lot of pressure and pressure from within. It just seems like that pressure bubble kind of encompass them. At different points during the year and it caused them not to plate the way we know Wisconsin to play. Ball with a win like they had the other night and now a potential win against the number one seed. Maybe some of that pressure just kind of goes by the wayside and they start playing basketball the way we know hall the Wisconsin team can play basketball. Well when you have a senior Layden teen. That you know they start force seniors. They have written. They haven't been knocked out of the tournament prior to the sweet sixteen and each of the last three years. So these guys are comfortable on the big stage would the right skip right right and maybe finally. In you know finally they get out of the Big Ten. Turn a man not the big ten's season where teams know them so well. And now they're certain to impose their will are teams that don't get to see Wisconsin all them. And that's what I like about the potential of winning today because when I look at Villanova to meet Villanova is Wisconsin. And I hate to say it because not on the homer with the red light but Villanova with a little bit more athletic schism I think personally then what Wisconsin has. But again a very mature team. Eight team that plays sound fundamental basketball team that has with stood what turned out to be a pretty good Big East Conference.
